AI search engine optimization: a practical playbook
AI search engines read pages, pick passages and write an answer with a few links. Optimizing for them is less about tricks and more about being the clearest source on a topic. This playbook covers the work in the order that pays off fastest.

How AI search engines build an answer
When someone asks Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Gemini or Perplexity a question, the system usually searches an index, fetches a handful of pages and pulls short passages from them. It then writes an answer and may cite the pages it used. Your job is to make your pages easy to fetch, easy to understand and easy to quote.
Step 1: let AI search crawlers in
Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. These fetch pages for answers. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and Google-Extended are a separate decision. You can block training and still allow search. The AI crawler robots.txt guide has examples.
Step 2: put the text in the HTML
If your site relies on JavaScript to show content, many AI crawlers will see an empty page. Use server rendering or static pages for anything you want quoted. A quick test is to view the page source and search for your main heading.
Step 3: write passages that can stand alone
- Answer the question in the first two sentences under each heading.
- Use specific numbers, names and prices where you have them.
- Keep one idea per paragraph so a single passage makes sense when quoted.
- Use headings that match how people phrase questions.
Step 4: describe the business clearly
AI systems need to know who you are before they recommend you. State your service, audience, location and price range on the homepage and on an about page. Keep these facts identical across your site, your Google Business Profile and directory listings.
Step 5: add structured data
Add Organization and WebSite markup to the homepage. Use Product, Service, Article or FAQPage where they genuinely fit. Structured data does not guarantee citations but it removes ambiguity about what a page describes.
Step 6: earn mentions elsewhere
AI answers often lean on third party sources such as reviews, comparison articles and industry directories. Being listed accurately in those places makes your brand easier to recommend. Focus on genuine coverage. Paid link schemes risk penalties in classic search.
Step 7: measure honestly
Track Google Search Console for classic search. For AI search, use readiness audits to confirm your fixes landed and answer tracking to see whether mentions change. Geolytic paid plans track saved questions through official Gemini, OpenAI and Claude APIs. Results show mentions, position and competitors, not invented rankings.
How this fits with classic SEO
Almost every step above also helps Google rankings. That is good news, because you do not need a separate strategy. Read GEO vs SEO for where the two overlap and where they differ.
